Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Announce Divorce

Just as summer is heating up with Tom Cruise, 49, in the blockbuster Rock of Ages film, he and his wife of five years Katie Holmes, 33, announce their divorce. Reuters reports Mrs. Tom Cruise filed for divorce in New York City last Thursday and has requested sole custody of the couple’s six-year-old daughter, Suri. It seems the divorce filing — especially for “sole” and “primary residential custody” of daughter Suri — came as a shock to Mission Impossible‘s Cruise, who is filming “Oblivion” this week in Iceland.

Over, the weekend, Cruise’s longtime lawyer Bert Fields stated to the Los Angeles Times, “I would hope that it’s not a contentious matter. I know Tom is not a particularly contentious person.” On Friday, an anonymous Cruise representative released this statement: “Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out.”

Meanwhile, it has been discovered that Jack and Jill star Holmes has two high-powered East Coast attorneys. New Jersey divorce lawyer Jonathan Wolfe released this statement on Thursday in an exclusive interview with People magazine: “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”

It is also being reported that Holmes has hired New York attorney Allan E. Mayefsky. The New York Times says Mayefsky represents “complex matrimonial matters” with “leaders” in the business, entertainment and sports worlds.

On Saturday, US Weekly reported Holmes had rented an apartment in New York City separate from the usual apartment the Cruise clan occupies when in The Big Apple.

Cruise and Holmes are worth an estimated $275 million and they are supposedly armed with an “extensive pre-nuptial agreement,” so says TMZ publisher Harvey Levin.

Cruise and Holmes were married in 2006 at a lavish ceremony at a castle in Italy. This was Holmes’ first marriage and divorce. Cruise has been married twice before. His first wife was actress Mimi Rogers. Cruise has two children with his second wife, Nicole Kidman.

Digital divorce is trending again on social networks this time because of the ongoing Kim Kardashian and Kris Humprhies divorce case. The wild accusations flying about are now coming from alleged emails, texts and documents in the possession of Humphries’ ex-girlfriend Myla Sinanaj, whom Kardashian recently subpoenaed.

TMZ reports Humphries told Sinanaj that Kim told him her mother Kris Jenner actually arranged Kim’s sex tape as a promotional tool. Kim claims this is a flat-out lie and countered this accusation with the subpoena for Sinjanaj’s evidence. The Kardashians also claim Humphries is lying about his heart break after learning his marriage was perhaps fraudulent.

Whatever the claims and whatever the game, the digital age really is changing divorce forever. Emails, texts, Facebook posts, Twitter tweets, Instagram pictures and even geotagging can sabotage your own divorce if you aren’t careful.

Rumors Abound Leading up to Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries Divorce Trial

Kim is with Kanye now and Kris is going down the aisle straight to divorce court. Even before the trial begins, rumors are abounding about how is the couple is going to tackle this most public of confrontations, especially cameras in the court room. What are Kim, Kris (and Kanye) going to do?

Here’s what’s happening lately in the Kardashian celebrity divorce rumor mill:

  • The pair will be deposed separately within the next two weeks in their respective home towns

and it will not be filmed. However, a private stenographer will provide a formal transcript. A trial court date will possibly be slated for late this year.

  • Kim is not happy about having TV cameras filming the actual trial.
  • Both Kim and Kris want to have TV cameras on hand to film the entire trial.

Confused? As for strategy, it seems Kris wants Kim to admit the marriage was a fraud and he has also demanded Kim apologize for leading him down the wedding path.

“It’s taken years to get to know myself. I had never really taken time to cultivate who I was,” said Suvari recently to Boston Common magazine. “I’ve felt drained by it. But I feel like I’m really, finally, content at this point in my life. I’m accepting of who I am and how diverse I am and honoring that. All of it.”
